Seiko Introduces new Prospex Divers with a New Case Design
Seiko has announced three new additions to its Prospex line of divers, each with a refreshed case design that bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Omega Seamaster Diver 300M.
The dial design of these new Prospex divers is where the Seamaster inspiration is most apparent. Each model features a dial with a wave pattern is a clear nod to the Seamaster, as is the hour hand design that blends the Seamaster’s hour and minute hands.
The bezel insert on these Seiko models also bears a resemblance to the Seamaster, with numerals at 15, 30, and 45, though the font used is not an exact match. The shape of the bezel also has a hint of the Seamaster’s dodecagon design. Even the crown guard has been influenced by Omega’s design language.
While Seiko is not explicitly highlighting any connection between these new Prospex divers and the Omega Seamaster, it’s clear that the Japanese brand has been heavily “inspired” by the design of its Swiss rival.
This cross-pollination of ideas is not uncommon in the watch industry, and it will be interesting to see how Seiko’s take on these Seamaster-esque elements resonates with collectors and enthusiasts.
(Should we call it the Seimaster ?)
Specs and Availability
These new Seiko Prospex divers feature a stainless new steel case measuring 41.3 x 12.5 x 48.2mm, housing the reliable 6R55 automatic caliber.
While not limited editions, they represent a new case design for the Prospex line. The models include:
- the SPB481 (SBDC201 JDM) with a champagne dial and black bezel
- the SPB483 (SBDC203 JDM) with a blue dial and bezel
- the SPB485 (SPB485JC JDM) with a black dial and copper-colored bezel.
Given their larger 41.3mm case size, these Seiko divers may not be the best fit for those with smaller wrists (6 inches or less). However, this is a common consideration for many watches over 40mm in diameter.
